Here are some of the varieties of English, along with examples of each.

 

British English

 

The form of English spoken in the United Kingdom. It includes diverse regional dialects. Example: I fancy a biscuit. In American English, a biscuit is a cookie.

 

American English

 

The form of English used primarily in the United States, which has its own vocabulary, spelling, and pronunciation. Example: I need to take out the trash. In British English, this would more commonly be expressed as, I need to take out the rubbish.

 

Australian English

 

The variant spoken in Australia includes unique slang and idiomatic expressions. Example: She’s a real drongo, meaning someone who is foolish.

 

Canadian English

 

The form of English used in Canada, has influences from both British and American English, often featuring unique vocabulary. Example: IIneed to grab a double-double from Tim Hortons before we head out to the cottage this weekend. In this sentence, double-double refers to a coffee with two creams and two sugars, a popular term in Canada, and cottage is commonly used to describe a vacation home in a rural area.

 

Indian English

 

English spoken in India, is characterized by unique phrases, pronunciation, and grammar influences from various regional languages. Example: I will revert back to you, meaning I will respond to you.

 

Scottish English

 

The English spoken in Scotland, which include variations from standard English and incorporates Scots vocabulary. Example: Aye, I’ll be there, meaning Yes, I will be there.

 

New Zealand English

 

The variant spoken in New Zealand shares similarities with Australian English but has distinct expressions and pronunciation. Example: She’s a real meanie, meaning someone who is unkind.

 

Singapore English (Singlish)

Nigerian English
