Improve Your Confidence

Confidence

When it comes to speaking English, many tell me they lack confidence. My response to that is to to ask, what is confidence? For if you can define confidence, you're on you way to solving your confidence problem.

Confidence is a state of mind that reflects your belief in your abilities, judgment, and actions. It is the feeling of being certain and assured in your self-worth, skills, and decisions.

Confidence manifests in various areas of life, such as work, relationships, or personal goals.

Why do people say they lack confidence?

Many people struggle with confidence due to various reasons, including ~

  • Negative self-talk and self-doubt

  • Fear of failure or rejection

  • Lack of experience or feeling unprepared

  • Comparison to others, and

  • Past experiences of failure or criticism

For example, let's say Rachel works for an international sales company. She loses confidence when asked to to speak with overseas English speaking associates because she fears making mistakes and being embarrassed.

Here are 3 ways to overcome lack of confidence ~

  • Practice and preparation ~ start by practicing regularly, focusing on specific skills and techniques. Prepare yourself mentally by visualizing success and positive outcomes.

  • Positive self-talk and reframing ~ Instead of focusing on negative thoughts like I'm not good enough, reframe your mindset by saying I've worked hard and prepared well, I can do this. Also focus on your strengths and accomplishments.

  • Small steps and gradual exposure ~ Instead of jumping into a large performance, start with small steps, such as speaking in front of a small group or recording yourself to learn how you sound. This will help you gradually build your confidence and comfort level.

By following these strategies, you will overcome your lack of confidence and develop a more positive and assured attitude, especially when speaking in front of an audience.

One more thing ~ years ago I had a mentor who repeatedly told me what you believe is. He told me that the human brain is similar to a computer in that it can be programmed to believe things. So try this ~

Every morning when you brush your teeth or comb your hair, look at yourself in the mirror and say aloud, I have great confidence. Make yourself believe it. If something bad happens during the day which knocks your confidence down a little, find a mirror, look at yourself, and say aloud I have great confidence.

It really works. Why? Because what you believe, is.
